I’ve always said little girl rooms are the most fun to decorate because they can be whimsical and pretty….easy peasy. As little girls become young women, they begin to develop their own sense of style and have opinions about what they would like their space to look and feel like. Thankfully, Sophie has great taste and happens to follow my mantra that a light neutral room looks great with some fresh pops of bright colour and shiny stuff. Of course there must also be room for lounging and impromptu dance parties when friends come over!
Sophie’s room came together quickly because we had already picked out a really colourful and fun group of colours and fabrics for the bed and these were the jumping off point for the rest of the room design.
Sophie decided that the lounging space should take centre stage so Bob and I removed the big free standing trestle table and built the desk from supplies we found at our local lumber supply. I’m really happy with how it turned out. It is perfect in the little nook by the window and gives Sophie the room to entertain when friends come over that she didn’t have before.
Another exciting part of this project was that I learned how to rewire wall outlets and switches (we are slowly updating these as we make our way through the house). It wasn’t as hard as I thought and now that I know how to do it, it is definitely a life skill that everyone should know. The best part was the supercool outlet I installed that is equipped with 2 USB ports for really quick charging for all your devices….genius!
We’ve got some fun and cheeky art on the walls, along with a pretty pin board for all of Sophie’s important items (we are still working on a photo collage but picking the perfect photos has proved to be more time consuming than I thought). And of course the pink pompom fringe we added to the curtain panels and lampshade pulls it all together.
One kid room down – two to go.
